At Somme Prairie Grove, the magnificent blooms upon the knobs of the savanna come to life in the warmth of the morning light.

Communicate more than subject matter. Learn to share your inner light and that of Earth’s star.

July is when Mike MacDonald teaches his groundbreaking landscape photography system called The Chicago Prairie Style through the workshops entitled Light & The Landscape on Saturday, July 16 and Art of Landscape Photography on Sunday, July 17. ONLY 6 STUDENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED INTO EACH CLASS. So, don’t delay. Each session begins in the classroom and ends in the beautiful light of the prairie. On July 27, students return to the classroom with newly created landscape images, where Mike provides valuable feedback. Watch Mike’s television interview that shows his inspiration for The Chicago Prairie Style:

Learn About Mike's Groundbreaking Landscape Photography Workshops

Communicate more than subject matter. Learn to share your inner light and that of Earth’s star:

At the moment sunbeams enter the scene,
they ethereally and dramatically alter all tangible elements,
recasting the land into a complex story of highlights and shadows,
with every physical subject taking a back seat
to a star that steals the show.”
—from Mike’s book, “My Journey into the Wilds of Chicago”

THE CHICAGO PRAIRIE STYLE: Ansel Adams chose to depict the towering terrain of the mountainous west by casting the distant mountain as the main character. However, this approach quickly breaks down when used to portray the depth and grandeur of the flat outstretched prairie, where the story and the stars of the show dominate the foreground. Mike has solved this mystery with his heart-sensitive system for making dramatic, intimate, and emotional photographs of any scene—prairie to mountain, desert to seascape.

“Unlike children and wide-eyed animals,
the landscape has no eyes to its soul,

no straight glimpse into its heart.
Yet, in a quest to give nature a voice,

its mysteries have inspired me to create images
that conjure emotion.”
